This app-specific policy supplements the BlackFox Media LLC master Privacy Policy at https://www.blackfox-media.com/privacy-policy and governs Backtrail Pro, an off-grid messaging app.

Privacy Summary

Backtrail Pro is off-grid messaging for goTenna Mesh® and Meshtastic® radios. We do not operate servers that collect your data, we do not require an account, and the app contains no advertising, analytics, or tracking. Messages and any location you choose to share travel by radio directly to other people's radios and never pass through BlackFox.

About This App

Backtrail Pro connects to radios you own over Bluetooth to send and receive messages, check-ins, locations, and SOS alerts without cell service. It keeps a message history and contacts on your device, shows people and your breadcrumb trail on a map, lists the nodes on a Meshtastic mesh, and reads and changes supported radio settings. It works with no internet connection.

Information We Do Not Collect

- Identifying information (name, email, phone, address)

- Your contacts, photos, files, or call and SMS data

- Background location

- Behavioral analytics, telemetry, or advertising identifiers

- Any data sent to BlackFox or to any third-party company

Data & Storage

- Local only: Your nickname, radio IDs, group passphrase, settings, message history, contacts, and breadcrumb trail are stored only on your device. Delete them in Settings → Data, or by uninstalling the app.

- What you send: Messages, with your nickname, go out over radio to radios in range. Your location is included only when you tap Location, send an SOS, or send a check-in with "Include my location in check-ins" turned on. Anyone who can read that message can see it.

- Location: Used only while the app is open, for the map, your breadcrumb trail, and messages you choose to send. Never accessed in the background. (On Android 11 and older, Android also requires it for Bluetooth scanning.)

- Camera: Used only to scan QR codes when you tap Scan QR. Images are not saved or sent.

- Notifications: Created on your device for incoming messages; they do not pass through any server.

- Background connection (Android, optional, off by default): Keeps the Bluetooth link to your radio open while the app is in the background, with a persistent notification.

- Map tiles: The radar map uses no internet. The optional street map (off by default) downloads images from OpenStreetMap's servers, which receive your IP address and the map area you view.

- Encryption: With a group passphrase, goTenna messages (including locations) and nicknames are encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM. Meshtastic messages use the channel's own encryption; the default public channel is readable by anyone. Encryption does not hide that a message was sent, its timing, or the sender's radio ID.

- Permissions: Bluetooth, location, camera, and notifications, each used only as described above. You can revoke any permission in your device settings.

- Third-Party SDKs: None. Backtrail Pro contains no advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs. It is open-source software (GNU GPL v3.0); source code is available free on request.

Distribution

Google Play and the Apple App Store. Google and Apple may collect information during download and installation under their own Privacy Policies; BlackFox receives only aggregate statistics such as installs and crashes. Google Play Data safety lists location and in-app messages as collected because, when you choose to send them, they leave your device by radio to the people you send them to; they are optional, used only for app functionality, and never sent to BlackFox or shared with any company. Apple App Store privacy label: Data Not Collected.

Your Privacy Rights

Because we do not collect or store your personal data on any server, most data-protection rights are honored automatically. At any time you can delete your data in the app or uninstall it. Questions or requests: support@blackfox-media.com; we respond within 45 days.

Children's Privacy

Backtrail Pro is not directed to children under 13 (16 where applicable), and we do not knowingly collect information from children. Contact support@blackfox-media.com with any concerns.

Data Security

Your device is the primary security boundary. Backtrail Pro relies on the Android and iOS sandboxing models and stores data in its private app storage. Rooted or jailbroken devices may weaken these protections. Share your group passphrase and channel QR codes only with people you trust.

Changes To This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes to the app or the law. Material changes are reflected in the Last Updated date and noted in the in-app About screen. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.

Governing Law

Governed by the laws of the State of Texas, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules; disputes brought exclusively in Texas courts except where mandatory local law provides otherwise.
